Our Story

Dr. Heather Akins, PT DPT
Pelvic Health Physical Therapist

Brooke Cannoot, MS OTR/L, TPS
Occupational Therapist, Doula, &
Therapeutic Pain Specialist.

We began our journey together over eight years ago at Mount Carmel Home Care. Heather as a Physical Therapist and Brooke as an Occupational Therapist. We share a love for empowering individuals in their health and well-being with a specific passion for pregnancy and childbirth.

With Heather's expertise in Pelvic Health and Brooke's specialization as a Therapeutic Pain Specialist and Childbirth Doula, we offer a holistic approach that combines the biomechanics of birth with the neurology of pain management.

As we move through our own reproductive health transitions, we recognize the lack of resources to support perimenopause and menopause. As such, we have developed WombWisdom, an educational program to reduce fear and confusion with this challenging transition.

Together their mission is to take the fear out of life’s transitions - whether it’s pregnancy, postpartum, or beyond—and equip you with the tools to step into your power confidently. Through a blend of nervous system-focused techniques (top-down) and physical strategies (bottom-up), they aim to support your health and well-being from every angle. Together, they are here to help you embrace these life changes with understanding, confidence, and strength.

We are honored that you are considering WombWise to assist you to experience optimal well-being at all stages in your life.

More about Brooke

At WombWise, Brooke is the expert in the "Top Down."  In other words, how the brain and the nervous system plays the role of the CEO in all aspects of health and well-being. Brooke is an Occupational Therapist specialized in both mental health and therapeutic pain, and is a healer trained in alternative modalities including yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and energy healing.  Brooke recognizes that for physical symptoms to be well managed, healing must occur on the mental/emotional and soul level through, and by, a well regulated nervous system.

She is particularly passionate about reproductive health and nervous system management throughout each stage- fertility through menopause.  She is certified birth doula and assists the labor and birth process by using ancient knowledge techniques to reduce fear and promote mindfulness.

She has studied yoga and Eastern mysticism for over 22 years and this work inspired her to create the non profit, Madhukara as a founding board member.  She is dedicated to the collective awakening of the divine presence in all of humanity by serving others as reflections of the divine.

She is a mother to 3 incredible children- Gaia, Uma & Cy.

More about Heather

Headshot of Heather Akins

As a licensed physical therapist with a foundation in orthopedics, Heather's professional path was influenced by her own personal birth experience. This pivotal moment inspired her to specialize in pelvic health, driven by a deep passion for empowering individuals to feel grounded and confident in their bodies as they navigate life’s transitions.

Heather takes a transformative 'bottom-up' approach to care, focusing on how the physical body reflects deeper patterns and manifestations.

She provides a comprehensive assessment that integrates orthopedic and pelvic health expertise while considering the many factors that influence how we feel and function in our bodies. Passionate about the power of movement, Heather believes exercise is medicine and integrates this philosophy into her practice.

Partnering with Brooke, They’ve developed a comprehensive approach to birth preparation and recovery, blending their expertise to provide holistic care.

Outside of work, Heather is a proud mom to two energetic daughters, Ellie and Abbie, who share her love of dance and gymnastics. In her free time, she enjoys weightlifting, dancing, practicing yoga, exploring nature, and diving into a good book.
